When you create a web site you'll need to have it "hosted" so others can access your pages. There are a number of alternatives and options you should consider.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to have your site hosted by your Internet service provider. Many ISPs provide free hosting of a website for their customers. While this at first seems attractive, there are two important drawbacks.

First, your website URL or address will probably contain your ISP's name, for example http://www.yourisp.com/~yourname/. This is not a professional looking address. While it may be nice enough for your friends, it will not build confidence in you by outsiders.

Second, if you change your Internet service provider you will lose your website. You will need to save your web pages, get another site, and upload your pages again. Then you'll need to tell your friends about your new site.

A better approach would be to get a domain name, find a web hosting service, and load your web pages. They will have a permanent home that all your friends and the search engines will know about.

So, now, what should you know about various web hosting services?

First, your site will be hosted on a remote computer, called a server. There are basically two kinds of servers in common use: Windows-based and Unix/Linux-based. For most people with simple websites, the differences are not important. If you are interested in running scripts or using more advanced features you will want to explore the features of these operating system platforms more closely.

Hosting services provide a number of services for you. But, each service has some limits. For example, while most hosting accounts allow you to host a single domain name, some services allow you to host multiple domain names using a single account. These (reseller) accounts will probably not be needed by the average person who only has a single website. But, you should know they are available.

Other limitations you should examine are:

• Bandwidth: the number gigabytes of traffic are you allowed per month.
• Storage: the number of megabytes or gigabytes of storage for web pages, images, statistics, emails, etc.
• cgi-bin access: this allows you to load server scripts/

These are some of the basic features you should look at when evaluating web hosts. Make the right selection to gain maximum success.
