There are many carriers that provide international calling. International calls all use fiber optic networks that transmit your calls flawlessly anywhere in the world.

All fiber optic calls are transmitted digitally. That means that your voice is digitally encoded into digital 1's and 0's. A specific frequency of light is then blinked on and off to transmit the digital signal along the fiber from one point to another. When the digital signal is finally received at the destination , the signal is converted to analog so you can hear it on your phone.

What you should know is that there are two types of fiber optic networks. They carry your calls using different techniques.

The major traditional telephone companies maintains fiber optic networks all over the world. When you make a call, the analog signal from your phone is transmitted along the telephone lines to your local phone company. There it is converted to digital and sent along the optical network, eventually reaching the local phone company of the person you called. The digital signal is then converted to analog and sent along the phone lines to the person you are calling.

Problems with poor voice quality are normally due to problems in converting between digital and analog and in the transmission of the analog signals along the local phone company's lines. Many foreign countries have poor telecommunications infrastructure and crosstalk (where you hear noise and even other conversations) is sometimes a major problem.

Broadband Internet allows another type of transmission. Broadband phone service is also called "Voice over Internet Protocol" or VoIP. Here, at least one of the analog to digital conversions at a local phone company is eliminated.

If you have broadband phone service, your voice is encoded to digital by a converter that is connected to your broadband modem. Your conversation is transmitted digitally to the cable company or (with DSL) to your local phone company. There the digital signal is further transmitted along the Internet's fiber optic network to the local phone company where it is converted to analog and transmitted along the phone lines to the person you called.

If both you and person you call have broadband phone service, then the conversions between digital and analog take place in the conversion boxes connected to your broadband modems. This reduces the possibility of poor voice quality due to out dated telecommunications infrastructure.

In many cases the VoIP systems are able to provide less expensive calling than the traditional phone companies. You can look for great rates from most companies that provide international VoIP communications.
