Competition is fierce in the telecommunications industry. With deregulation, any provider of long distance services can now provide service to you.
A number of large telecommunications companies have extensive fiber optic networks that stretch across the country. Each network consists of multiple cables that span the country, east to west and north to south.
Not only do traditional phone companies have fiber optic networks. There are additional fiber optic networks for large Internet service providers. The cables for both the phone companies and Internet service providers can carry phone calls. If your call is using an Internet service provider's cable, you are using a service called "Voice over IP" or VoIP.
Each cable in these networks contains many strands of fiber. Light travels down a fiber, blinking on an off as it carries the digital version of your voice from one location to another. Each fiber can transmit light of many different colors, each color carrying a different call (a packet of digital data).
Because companies plan ahead for growth, many of the fibers in a cable are held in reserve for future use. Since they are not carrying light signals, they are referred to as "black fiber".
But, to make additional money from unused (black) fiber, these companies lease this fiber to other companies at relatively low costs. So, numerous "cheap long distance" companies have sprung up. They use these leased fibers to carry your calls all across the country. They keep track of your usage and bill you monthly.
What does this mean to you? It simply means that your calls are using the fiber networks of the big telecommunications companies or the big Internet service provider companies, but you are not being charged the high prices these providers typically charge. You are getting the high quality of their fiber optic network, but are being charged the cheaper prices of the low cost, "cheap long distance" provider.
